Smartphones dominated in 2017.
That’s according to Google’s Year in Search report, which highlights the top-trending searches in the US over the past 12 months – terms that had the highest spike in traffic this year compared to 2016.
While devices like the Nintendo Switch and Apple Watch Series 3 were among the most-searched tech products, it was smartphones from Samsung, Google, and Apple that captured customers’ attention.
Here are the 10 top-searched tech products in 2017:
10. Samsung Galaxy Note 8
Samsung’s follow-up to last year’s disastrous Galaxy Note 7 made its debut in September. The Note 8 packs in the best of what Samsung has to offer: the biggest screen, the most power, and advanced features like split-screen multitasking and stylus input.
The Note 8 starts at $930, and can go for as much as $960 depending on your carrier.
9. Apple Watch 3
Apple's third-generation Apple Watch, the Series 3, launched in September. The watch is nearly identical to previous versions, with one major difference: the Series 3 has a cellular connection that allows you to leave your phone at home and rely solely on the watch.
The Series 3 costs $399 with cellular or $329 without.
8. Google Pixel 2
In October, Google unveiled its second generation flagship phone: the Pixel 2. The phone, which starts at $649 and comes in two sizes, retained many of the features of last year's model while adding new camera options, new colors, more base storage, and a slightly faster processor.
7. Super NES Classic
The Super NES Classic Edition console is an $80 miniature version of the original Super Nintendo console that plays 21 built-in games. Because the console was such a hit, Nintendo dramatically increased supply through 2018.
6. iPhone 8 Plus
The iPhone 8 Plus arrived in September, two months before the pricier, flashier iPhone X. But critics urged customers not to overlook the phone, which features an all-glass back, dual rear cameras, and a 5.5-inch display.
The iPhone 8 Plus starts at $799 and comes in three colors.
5. Razer Phone
Razer, a company best known for its gaming computers and accessories, has jumped in the smartphone fray with its own $700 Phone.
Razer's Phone has loud speakers, a great camera, and an all-metal body - and according to my colleague Antonio Villas-Boas, the phone has "one great feature that no other phone has" - incredibly smooth visual images that surpass anything you'll see on other smartphones.
4. Samsung Galaxy S8
The Galaxy Note 8 was unveiled in April and, at the time, my colleague Steve Kovach called it "the most beautiful phone in the world." The device, which starts at $750, has a curved screen, wireless charging, and a best-in-class camera.
3. Nintendo Switch
The Nintendo Switch launched in March and has proved to be a smash hit throughout 2017 - since March 3, more than 10 million Switch consoles have been sold.
But Nintendo has struggled to keep up with demand for the Switch. Up until fairly recently, it was difficult to walk into a store and find one available for purchase.
2. iPhone X
The iPhone X arrived in November to overwhelmingly positive reviews. The phone, which starts at $999, features a nearly edge-to-edge display, all-glass body, fun features like Animoji and portrait mode selfies, and no home button.
1. iPhone 8
The iPhone 8 debuted alongside the iPhone 8 Plus in September. The device starts at $699 and features a 4.7-inch display, wireless charging, and a slightly upgraded camera compared to the iPhone 7. While most reviews said the phone was great but not game-changing, the iPhone 8 is the top-searched gadget of the year.
